The Jellyfish are recurring creatures in the Wonder Boy series, serving antagonistic and benevolent roles on the heroes' quests.

Appearances[]

The jellyfish appears as an enemy in all versions of Wonder Boy in Monster Land. In this game, they jump vertically from the water before falling down. As they tend to appear between two platforms, they often need to be defeated in order to safely jump through. The jellyfish are not strong enemies, needing only a single hit to be defeated, and lack any attack ability though will damage Book if he touches them. Defeating a jellyfish awards the player with 200 points.

A smack of jellyfish also appears in the 16-bit editions of Wonder Boy in Monster World, as an ally allowing the player to progress. Unlike its appearance in the previous game, the jellyfish will not damage Shion upon contact, and repeated contact with the jellyfish is required here to traverse a large expanse of water.

Narrative[]

Early in his adventure, Shion travels from his home across the shores of Monster World's ocean in search of Alsedo, the Fairy Village. Preventing him from reaching his destination, however, is a cliff that is too high to climb, overlooking the water. A nearby island holds a sign which reads "You can ride a jellyfish!", and beyond this, jellyfish can be seen jumping from the water regularly. Shion can jump atop of the first jellyfish, to propel himself upwards with enough momentum to reach a second jellyfish, and so on. After riding four jellyfish across the waves, Shion gains enough distance to reach the top of the cliff, at the edge of Alsedo's border.
